Wyandottes were first established in the 1880s. The original colouring was silver laced, which was soon followed by gold laced. There are now 17 colours in common use including self coloured Wyandottes which are blue, black or buff in colour, White Wyandottes, Laced (Silver, Gold, Blue Laced Gold, Buff Laced, Blue Laced Silvers), Columbian Wyandottes, and Pencilled Wyandottes (Partridge and Silver Pencilled). Not all are recognised by every poultry association – for example the American Poultry Association currently only recognises golden laced, silver laced, white, black, buff, Columbian, partridge and silver penciled. Wyandottes are a medium sized hardy breed (available as full size, or bantams). Their rose comb makes them less likely to suffer from frostbite in cold weather. They  lay around 180-220 brown eggs a year.
